3 gallon is painful to maintain. Small mistakes on water change can wipe out your whole stock if they're not hardy.

I suggest to go with 10 gallon at the very least if you're just starting out. Smaller tanks are usually for experts who are well versed in treating water.

What kind of stock are you thinking of getting?
