every now and then I am inspired by certain people, and become humbled in the process. they are like little reminders of how lucky i am to be above ground.

but what I came across today was truly something else

A patient of mine, an lady in her golden years, though you could see through the wrinkles in her skin, tainted with years of hardship...had a bright smile that persisted

No husband, just a single provider for two adopted children, whom she had been granted responsibility for when her sick friend would not be able to take care of them. Nevermind that she works 16 hour days as an intensive care nurse, nevermind that she has two jobs with a half an hour "lunch break" to commute from one job to the next, nevermind that after this she has to return home to feed her children and take care of them.

Fastforward 36 years of work, and forced retirement in her late 60's due to medical conditions from being overworked, she still continues to take care of patients at home and hosts free tutoring sessions for underprivileged children.

To no surprise, her son, now an electrical engineer at a well-established company, and her daughter, now a successful attorney, still continue to show the same appreciation and love for her as they did back then.

Sacrifice is NOT the weekend party night you give up so you can study. It is NOT giving up your car so you can save a few bucks and take the bus instead. It is NOT eating at home so you can save money from dining out. It's much more than that.

True sacrifice is altruism. It is taking responsibility to empower yourself, so that in turn you may empower others. It was and always will be my goal to become educated so that I can one day become empowered to help others in need - go to africa and work for a few years with the idea that I will be making a pinch of what i would be making in north america.
