Agreed. Cichlids + plants = not a good idea.

I've had a few Cichlid tanks over the years, and anytime I've tried plants, they always end up either ripped up, or dug up.

dhawes, your tank is off to a good start, however I would add a fair bit more gravel/sand. Cichlids love to dig, and I always loved it when they did. They sort of aquascape the tank for you lol. Plus, it's fun to watch. Perhaps add some ironwood/spider-wood to the tank, to help fill the mid-to-top section of the tank.
