In truth, counselling is not effective for everyone.
In some cases, the counselee and counsellor may not connect. Because counselling relationships are so close not every counselee will be compatible with every counsellor and vice versa. For this reason it's worth a shot to try seeing a different counsellor if you're not experiencing progress with the one you're seeing.
In other cases, and this is more common, the counselee may not be prepared to engage their problems. There's no fault on the part of the counselee in these cases. But it might be better for them to take a break and come back to counselling at a later point.
I cannot stress enough the potential benefit of it. It's gets easier and easier after the first session so if you're nervous, don't worry.
