I lived in the same type of neighbourhood. I found that a motion sensor with a ridiculously bright halogen light helped. I would stay up late, and see the thieves as they rolled around the neighbourhood in Astro vans usually. On a couple of occasions I would actually see the van pull up to my car, the flood lights turn on making it bright as day, then they drive off to rob someone else.
