Given the leaps-and-bounds improvement in Lack's game coming off of hip surgery, I'm guessing that someone with a bit more natural talent (based on previous career) like Markstrom would be able to reap more benefits. And also considering Markstrom's age, we're basically allotted a couple of years before we can expect to see whether he's number-1-goalie material. Let's not forget Cory Schneider didn't really get thought of as elite until he was about 26. That's 2 years from now for Markstrom.
Plus he's so damn huge. Given his pedigree it wouldn't be too surprising imo if he turned out like Mike Smith, or more recently, Ben Bishop.

The Lack/Markstrom combo gives us cap flexibility and youth. The 2 of them make a combined <2.5M caphit next year, which is just over half of what we were paying Schneider by himself; include Lu's 15% pay out and we still come out ahead. A Schneider in his prime right now would be a waste with where the rest of the team is currently at and their ability to win anything worthwhile.

Those numbers equate to 6+M a year if you look at comparables. I'm not sure that's where the Canucks at this point would like to spend their cap dollars given the age of the forward core. Might as well "slum it" with Lack and Markstrom for the foreseeable future and spend the money up front. And it's not like Lack played horrible this season. The team in front of him was in shambles, but you can clearly see the potential there with Lack and what he can provide the team.
But there's no harm in hoping that Cory comes back lol

Depends if Kesler is still around, maybe?
