yes there's tons of backstory...and without watching 24 in its glory years you wont be able to appreciate this new one. If my memory is correct you need to watch up to season 5 (pretty much when the show stopped being good) and the end of the final season (8).

the rest of your post is too nitpicky imo...esp the comment on the president's motorcade in Europe. Being a network show it's expected there's gonna be plotholes/conveniences. My turn to nitpick: i'm a bit annoyed by the blue-tint/HDR effect they're going for vs the old golden/yellow palette in earlier seasons...it feels like im playing battlefield 3
so far the show is not bad...i like that the plot is focused on the drone controversy which is pretty relevant...even though they kinda did it in Homeland (same producer). One thing where 24 shines is the POTUS...Palmer, Logan and Heller. I hope they bring Agent Pierce back
