"I don't want to ruin the friendship" is a cop out. It's what people say when they aren't sure there's much more than friendship to be had, or know that the relationship wouldn't last and would rather be your friend than throw it away for sex. If he feels the way you do, it will be worth it to him to risk the friendship for...love? If he's not willing to risk it, be thankful that he respects you and likes you enough to know that he does want you around as a friend for a long time, rather than just throw the friendship away for sex.
