They might not. I think it's more likely they'll add the ability for companies to incorporate their NFC cards (transit is the first one that comes to mind) into Apple Pay. This way you could tap your phone just like tapping your card without having to open an app or interact with your phone.

To me it's a waste of time having something like a transit card in your phone if you need to do anything more than just tap it to work. Otherwise I'm just going to tap my card instead, since it's faster/easier.


There are lots of malicious NFC apps that can do everything from reading another persons card to hacking a card to get free transit. I don't think Apple wants any part of that mess or to have a news story about the hacker who was running around with an iPhone 6 stealing card info/payments from other people. So I'm pretty sure Apple will keep a short leash on developer access to NFC.
