Some ppl purchase insurance on their phones and when it is stolen they get a new one from the insurance company. Kinda of like double dipping selling you the phone, report it stolen, gets your money and gets a new phone.
I am using 8.0.1 on my 5s and so far no major issue. In fact battery life is about the same when i am using ios 7.
