In all honesty, people just mod their cars to however they like. Not everyone is wanting to mod their cars to impress others - a lot of people just want to try and be different and do something that pleases them.
Fake rust? Yeah it's not everyone's taste and it's understandable. Hell, it's a lot better than rusting your metal to shit with no chance of turning back afterwards. This isn't a "trend" either. Search online and see how many instances of fake rust on vehicles
You have people putting widebody kits and the fattest wheel/tire combo, guys with 8" rims stretch on 165 tires, camber set at -10 degrees, running staggered wheels on FWD cars, cars with massive spoilers/diffusers/splitters solely for that "racecar" look, stickers and sticker bombing everywhere. There's also the guys that go all out on their cars just to hardpark it 95% of the year, and guys that drive with less than 2" ground clearance and scraping on every flat road.
At the end of the day, it's all subjectivity and we shouldn't be disregarding someone's taste due to individual preferences. We should all be appreciating the work put into each and every vehicle.
The automotive scene sure would be a sad place if everyone did the same thing.
I "rusted" my Del Sol because honestly I can't give a fuck about what other people think, because at the end of the day it's how I choose to express myself through my vehicle.
Sometimes I feel as if the "pretentiousness" of the automotive scene really limits people and gets in the way of things. We even have someone on board saying he may not want to put in a certain engine because it would be "sacrilegious"
