OK, that part I understand - I guess I should phrase the question this way - would it be acceptable for, say their child who is fluent in English to translate for their parents at this interview?

I certainly don't expect them to conduct the interview in the person's chosen language though I would think that some sort of translator would be allowed if needed? (at the applicant's own expense of course) I'm just wondering (if it was allowed) if it could be a family member or if it had to be a neutral 3rd party. From the sounds of what you mentioned, it seems no translator allowed - it's English or French only directly to the applicant.
