But you don't know if the odd man out is lighter or heavier. If you weigh it 6 v 6, and take the lighter side, there is a chance that when you weigh the lighter side 3 v 3, it may balance if it turns out that the odd man out is actually heavier.
if the odd man out is in fact heavier, you now have to determine which man is heavier out of 6 possible men and you only get to use the see-saw balance one more time.
