For the case, I would recommend NZXT's S340 if the component colours all match together or your friend doesn't care. Best ATX case for the dollar by far.
If not, the Cooler Master N600 (more budget) or Fractal Design R4/R5 (more high-end) are all good cases. If he just wants the cheapest and decent case, I would recommend the Antec One. Just make sure the GPU fits in it.

We built it last night, he went with the Cooler Master N600 and I'm jealous, it's a hell of a lot nicer than my case. The supplied fans are quiet as hell which was a nice surprise, the only thing we can't figure out is what the heck the vertical removable panel is that's next to all the PCI slots? It looks about the size of a PCI card but I can't sort out what it's for:
(between the fan and PSU along the open edge of the case).
