Hotels taking gratuities from staff

Hi Everyone,

Just wanted to ask a question to those who work in the hospitality industry. Does your hotel take taxable tips/gratuities from the staff?

Reason I am asking is because I am trying to find what the standard practice is within the lower mainland.

Our non-union hotel in particular takes 40% of taxable gratuities from banquets and it goes back to the hotel. Also there have been instances where non-taxable gratuities have "accidentally" been taken from servers. There is also no breakdown nor any transparency to show how this money is being allocated.

Whenever a discussion is tried to be raised it gets quickly kicked under the rug.

Any opinions are welcome. Thanks!
