could, but it's not a good idea. Though it's unlikely that your batteries would explode... it's just not worth the risk when you can get a new pair for $24.
For boxes, marry your batteries together. Charge them together, use them together, don't split them up for your tube mods. If you have a bunch of the same batteries, mark the pairs of married batteries with a permanent marker so you know which ones go together.
