Hmmmm ... sounds like a black bear to me. There is distinct difference between a black bear and a brown bear or Grizzly.
Your point is right though ... people keep telling me to carry bear spray and I keep forgetting to get some. I have run into a couple of meandering black bears over the year and they weren't bothered by me but the circumstances could have been very different.
