You don't need to know French in order to get around Paris. Was just there a couple of weeks ago and we didn't run into any problems. Basic high school french, but I barely remember any of it. Can only recognize some words here and there, like ordering food.

Didn't buy a sim card for my unlocked phone so can't comment on that. Have only been using wifi and google maps with gps on for navigating. But since you are meeting people for the wedding, you probably need the phone more than I do.
