On the left in the picture is the shifter linkage from an Audi S3. 60 bucks for a shorter throw in the Golf was worth an hour to do it, even though adjustment was a pain in the ass (tried following the write ups and found myself with binding shifts and no movement, eyeballing it actually worked after messing with the "proper" method and getting nowhere). It really does feel better, not too dramatic, but the tighter feel is how it should have come from factory.
