It is possible the system does not work at all now due to the system being low on charge. After a certain point, the vehicle will not send power to the compressor clutch if the pressure sensor sees too little pressure. a/c systems do leak refrigerant slowly overtime, so wouldn't be surprised if you're low on charge. whether too low to engage compressor clutch, I don't know.
You can see the compressor without any tools except maybe a flash light. it's on the front left, very bottom pulley. I doubt it'll be engaged if you say the system does not blow cold at all. if they pulley/clutch appears brown, there's a chance that the clutch is the issue.
