I think either one is fine....whatever you like and can get a good deal.

Unlike many others, I don't think it is "bad" to start on a 600cc.
I had a CBR600F2 when I first started...it was perfectly fine.
I lowsided it once going into a tight corner, but honestly I would've done the same thing on a 250.

I just got back to riding and bought a new R3. I am perfectly happy with it. It actually felt much faster than I had imagine a 300cc would be.
Bike was also super light and easy to handle. Great bike for beginner and I think there is more than enough power to have fun unless you are riding with a bunch of highway squads.

(Only complaint on the R3 is the front shock feels way too soft....)
