The M1, and e28 M5 engine code is M88. The S has nothing to do wether its a real M car or not. This car stands for more about the classic motorsport division than anything since the e46 m3 csl.

I don't disagree with you Westopher, but I put the 1M in the same "M" class as the X6/X5M cars that they are developed by M division at BMW, but don't actually have parts that were made specifically for the 1M. It uses the M3 suspension, brakes, wheels, etc. It is a "parts" car (great parts though) like Porsche GTS cars.
I think the fact the 1M shares the same motor as other more pedestrian bimmers holds it back. They could have at least tuned the motor to provide +10hp to +20hp more than the same motor in the 335is and Z4is.....
