Unless you physically uplug it.. every time you start the car, the surges still go through the electronics. There is just no ground.

In 1.5 years it has left me stranded once because allowed my battery to fully drain instead of shutting off the camera like it is supposed to do. I only leave it on when I'm parked somewhere suspect or prone to getting hit (ex. Aberdeen)
