definitely not worried about staying in "lower end" places as long as it's clean and doesn't have bed bugs.....i can't even count the number of different hostels i've stayed in the last year and a half
as for getting scammed....i make a point of always checking what pricing should be before doing anything, taxis etc. if they try to rip me off $.25 i'm not concerned....once it get's to be a couple bucks i make an issue of it or just walk away, there's always someone else looking to get your money, never forget that
