While I absolutely love the original Independence Day, I'll also be the first to admit that it's the very embodiment of the typical 90's summer action flick. Heavy CGI, generic stereotypes in place of proper characters or character development, big explosions, uplifting ending, etc. Think of what else came out during that decade: The Rock, Con Air, T2, Die Hard, Starship Troopers, Goldeneye, Bad Boys, Jurassic Park and other such type of films. Those were all fantastic films, but if you really think about it, they all tended to (mostly) follow the same basic formula.
I think nostalgia will play into many of our minds about how this new one should be, and how it shouldn't focus on heavy CGI or that the alien ships are too large or whatever other complaint we can think of. The truth of the matter is that the original film
did make use of heavy CGI, it
did use unknown or non A-list actors, it
did feature the largest alien ships on screen up to that point, it did have a very formulaic plot and instead favoured explosions and effects.
Just something to keep in mind.
Also, forgot about this video. Watched it a couple months ago and it states pretty much the same thing, just in a slightly more amusing style.
