i appreciate the info those who have experienced this sort of travel have offered, that's exactly what i'm looking for....local food, local transport (to a degree), bare bones (but clean) accommodation

currently planning on a month, may cut that shorter if necessary, also might head to sri lanka depending on flight costs etc.

Non of the places I stated in where supper high end. Just wanted to point out not everything is crappy in India.

Good idea to have a role of TP with you at all times.
