My wife's sister and her husband just bought a house in Abby. I think it was $600k. Personally, I think it was a stupid idea. They're currently living in a really nice, newly-renovated, basement suite in my inlaws' house. It's in the Fraser Heights are of Surrey, and not too far from work for either of them.
Now, they'll be all the way out in Abby, by the Sumas exit. They won't have money to do anything fun since all their coin will be spent on the mortgage, gas, and daycare for their baby. If I were them, I would've just stayed in the basement suite, and eventually switch with the inlaws as my family gets bigger. When it comes to the baffling reason why they would inconvenience themselves so badly, I think it comes down to pride. My sister-in-law compares herself against the rest of the family, and all of her cousins had their own house except her, and my brother-in-law doesn't want to be the guy living off the parents, even though that's what he's been doing for the last 10 years. Pride is expensive.
