Not lazy at all, in fact, I would argue they are probably twice as hard working as the corolla designer. It's not easy working with the ever changing industry safety standards while maintaining very similar design and profile generation after generation and still making the marque look modern. Not to mention how most of the time with design, you add something but takes away from somewhere else. Very fine balancing act.
Corolla and economy boxes just scrap everything that was done before and just start with a blank slate and take design cues from everywhere else without ever having to consider what looks they have to maintain to preserve its DNA: Cheap appeal to the masses. Econo-boxes simply got bigger to accommodate more safety shit and growing bodies so that they can go with industry standards. Then they had to add sub-economy boxes in like the Yaris to make the Corolla higher class.
It takes much more thought into designing a new Porsche to have brand recognition. When someone is paying that coin for a Porsche, no one better confuse it with a Kia.
Even the WRX STi, in my opinion looks like a freakin' civic from the side.
Bottom line: When people look at a Porsche they're likely to not have to question what it is. Shiny? Porsche profile? Very familiar but something looks different? Probably a new Porsche.
When someone looks at a new Corolla: Is that a Camry? Or a Hyundai?
