DPS vs damage will sorta depend on the type of gun / situation.
A shotgun or Marksman rifle may have lower dps due to slow fire rates, but do so much damage in the right situations that dps is no longer the important factor.
For example, those guys who rush at you, one shot with the shotgun into their face is enough. It is easier than a higher dps assault rifle in that situation for example.
Or picking off high hp targets / bosses with marksman rifle.
I personally prefer lower rate of fire assault rifles with higher damage over higher rate of fire. I'm not great at controlling recoil, so I prefer slower but higher damage assault rifles. If the dps is slightly lower, but damage per shot is better, I'll usually keep it.
