a) Layover somewhere = 2 flights. BA/Avios will have to pay two airlines/flights for your seat.

b) If there's more than one carrier (airline) involved in an Avio redemption booking, the amount of points required is different. There's two separate charts. To put it into perspective, one way for Econ:

YVR-HKG on CX: 30,000 Avios
YVR-NRT on JL (25k) + NRT-HKG on JL (10k) = 35,000 total
YVR-NRT on JL + NRT-HKG on CX = 60,000 total
