Don't underestimate a 250cc bike. Contrary to what a lot of people say, I can get into a lot of trouble with my 300cc bike.
Not only that, you can run them harder, which makes it seem as though you're going as fast as the bigger bikes. Also it helps with alot of fundamentals like body positioning, leaning, aggressive cornering that wouldn't be possible for a beginner on a bigger/heavier bike aswell. I have no regrets starting off on a 300 either.
