There is a psychological reason to this. I think it has to do with routine. When you are young, everything is new and loads of information to process and the brain is trying to interpret it all. Doing the same shit, going to work, coming home, daily chores, your mind zones out and by the time you've snapped back into it, you realize a whole bunch of time has passed and you've done nothing out of the ordinary.
Go on a vacation, do something you haven't done before. I wake up early now and exlore the city by bike. My day seems much much longer. In fact, my perspective of the city changes derastically when I am not behind the wheel of a car. Yesterday morning, went around Stanley park twice had coffee for a couple of hours, went to a new bike shop and it was still morning when I started heading home.
