You gotta do it right - the worthy redemptions are premium classes, with carriers that charge little to no fuel surcharge. Definitely not worth redeeming it on Air Canada, especially for economy.
EVA Air, United, Turkish, ANA, Air China, Ethiopian, Swiss - just a few examples.
Of course, the one airline where the YQ (fuel surcharge) is worth it is Lufthansa First Class. You can minimize the surcharges by flying from countries that limit or prohibit taxes on airfare, such as Scandinavian ones.
Aeroplan is still very useful. Just have to use it wisely. Do some research on Flyertalk, there's a lot of information out there.
