wait until you get your first lucky egg (lvl 8 i think), then start saving/farming some of the monsters that are cheap to evolve.
once you have lots of the right kind of candy, pop your lucky egg and evolve like crazy. evolving gets you experience, and the egg will double it. this might be the fastest way to lvl up in the game. also do it in an area where theres a double or triple lure and you can catch pokemon in between, and get double xp for that as well.
