^ I've noticed that too, only lvl 8 though. I think they added that recently to try to increase in game purchases.

It's better to be on Valor or Instinct IMO, that way you have more to do (ie more likely gyms nearby are one of the other types). If everyone chose Mystic then pretty quickly there's not much to do.
