Skates are interchangeable at any level. Top end Bauer can compete with top end CCM. The materials they are using and designs are close enough that you won't really be able to tell the difference between brands.

It all comes down to a skate that fits you best. Do you like a hard boot or soft? Is your foot wide or narrow? Do you have any foot anomalies that need to be punched out?

Go to a good hockey store and try out a bunch of skates in your price range. If you truly care about getting the best skate for your dollar, expect to spend a couple hours there. Trying skates on, making a decision, and having them baked takes me about two hours. Do it right the first time, and you can use those skates for many years.
