The cat's out of the bag too with respect to what a realtor does. The Internet has made people think they're better lawyers, home stagers/photographers, marketers, home inspectors, and appraisers than in most cases people really are. So, people think that the work involved in a real estate transaction is really work that can be done by anyone who is willing to spend a couple of hours coming up with a plan to sell the property.
Also, it doesn't help that the commission structure has remained largely unchanged over time. Now realtors make double for doing the same amount of work compared to the 90s. Considering that most people's wages haven't doubled over the same period, there's lots of salt out there.
