I'll help you answer your 2 questions VERY logically...
Who wants a 6 when the 7 is out?: A person who is on a BYOB plan or is not eligible for an iPhone 7 under contract or someone who is switching to iPhone from Android and cannot dish out the full cost of an iPhone 7 will purchase an iPhone 6 for less than HALF of what it would cost them to buy the iPhone 7.
What's wrong with "you" 6 that makes you want to get a new phone?: Nothing is wrong with his 6, he is eligible for an upgrade and can do so at little to no cost to him. If he sells his 6 and gets $550 cash for it, that'll cover most of what he will be paying for his iPhone 7 on contract. I often hear you talk about your business ventures so the concept of buy low sell high shouldn't be foreign to you and neither should the simple economics of selling an old model phone that he has been using for 2 years and buying a new model for little cost be something that puzzles you.
Do you wait till your car, clothes, phones, etc are defective before you buy them?
I'll break it down for you even more to help you understand:
Purchase iPhone 6 in 2014 on a 2 year K for a price of - - - - >
$500 CAD
Sell iPhone 6 in 2016 when 2 year K is expired for a price of ->
~ $550
Purchase iPhone 7 in 2016 on a 2 year K for a price of - - - - ->
$700
So all in all in a time span of 2 years, he's spent $650 on 2 phones and he will do the same song and dance again in 2 years reusing the same sum of money to fund his desire to have the latest technology in a device that he uses every hour of the day/365.
