I'm not a fan of sharing rooms/bathrooms with strangers, so i've always gone with hotels. In Asia, hotel rates are way more reasonable than North America and you can easily find clean, modern accommodation, although sometimes the rooms are on the small side. No big deal if you're solo though.
I highly suggest Japan for a first time solo trip. There is just so much to see and experience aorund you that you will be hard pressed to get lonely, even if you don't end up meeting anyone new to talk/hang out with. Plus it's incredibly safe. Yes, bring your laptop since you'll need it to research new places to see/do, and make sure that you have a good data plan for maps/gps and when you're on trains and eating meals by yourself without anyone to talk to.
