I'm sure you've looked into it thoroughly, but just in case you didn't. Does your bike use a 68mm bb shell with English/italian threading?
For mtb's bb shell sizing didn't really change for the most part until the last few years with the popularization of pressfit bb's. ie. I could fit a 2016 shimano threaded external bb into my 1994 MTB and run shimano 2016 hollowtech ii cranksets.
