For mtb's bb shell sizing didn't really change for the most part until the last few years with the popularization of pressfit bb's. ie. I could fit a 2016 shimano threaded external bb into my 1994 MTB and run shimano 2016 hollowtech ii cranksets.

Most '90s Merlin had pressfit 30 bb's. this is an earlier model with a unique pf 24mm bearing. Unfortunately nothing fits but a company does still make a assortment of square taper spindles, so I can have my choice in square taper cranks, which are still widely manufactured.
