Lol... it's actually for convenience sake more than anything. The one I bought (and they have pretty much all the major models used by Zoji/Tiger) is pure metal with no coating. Meaning I can wash the rice inside the pot itself, and clean it with something harder than sponge when needed and it would stay the same way for years and years.
The fancy one from factory is probably better as far as cooking the rice goes, but if you don't use it gently, it starts to peel off little pieces in no time and it's pita (to find one) and $$$ to replace. Hence the switch.
