5 years ago, minimum wage was also $8, it is set to go up to $11.25 by the end of Summer. Everyone wants more. It all adds up.

Most of the expense hikes were already mentioned by Z3guy.
Canada also has some of the most expensive liquor due to all the taxing.
In Europe, a bottle of amazing wine from a nice vineyard will probably cost roughly $7. In BC? $7 will get you a bag of vinegar. Can't really compare.
