We've got an 05 XR auto and it's a great DD, the missus has been driving it for the past few years and she loves it. Tons of space, great on gas, parts are cheap since the same driveline is used in tons of cars, enough power to cross the Coq without problems but you're not going to be setting any speed records. They're quite light and have Celica suspension so they handle well. They're very reliable cars (I think the most common issue is the clock on the dash dying) however if I remember right the 03-04 models were slightly more prone to faults (first years of a new model so no surprise) so try to find an 05-09, unless you really want a cable throttle instead of drive-by-wire. Oh and the high beams are amazing, even with normal bulbs.
Some things to watch out for that I noticed when we were looking for hers: there seem to be a lot of rebuilts around, it seems like nearly half of them have manual windows, and I think if it was ordered with any TRD part (spoiler, muffler tip, etc) they took the trim badge off and put a TRD one on. TRD isn't a trim level so it makes it tricky to determine what it really is (base/XR/XRS), from memory the base models don't have the black trim between the front and rear windows.
What makes you want an XRS over an XR? The 1ZZ has a better power curve in the mid range than the 2ZZ does, so unless you're hanging out near the redline a lot a 1ZZ is going to be quicker.
