If you are sticking with tourist area, some common sense would be fine. But as blkgsr commented, it's really a shitty time to be visiting brazil.

I'd probably shift toward Argentina/Chile combo instead of Brazil/Arg.

Argentina is in a much better shape now after the political switch and even for a foreigner who doesn't manage the language, you can have a blast. Buenos Aires, Bariloche, Ushuaia, Perito Moreno glacier... etc can keep you busy for weeks. Throw Chile (Santiago/Puerto Montt)/Uruguay (Punta del Este, Coronia) into the mix and you have an awesome vacation.
