While I have a high appreciation for judo and training with judokas, training at a judo only gym won't meet everyone's goals unless you're strictly in it for judo. BJJ is definitely derived from judo newaza but the sport itself has evolved a lot since then (rubber guard, 50/50, berimbolo, etc). I am only assuming but I feel because BJJ is grappling focused, it can teach you a lot of intricate grappling details which may get passed in judo (where newaza is a part of the sport not the entire focus) Bigger MMA gyms also offer striking and mma specific classes which may be additional training others are looking for. I also respectfully disagree that BJJ is a fad.
