The only negative I've read about the Nordman WR is that it's got sloppy steering response (like a typical winter tire) - I don't see that as an issue for him.

The WRG3s would run him about $250 more than the WRs' - any reason to think that it's worth it?

thanks,
So here are the scenarios for when the WRG3 is worth it:
  • You drive a lot - the WRG3 has a longer treadlife warranty
  • You do the majority of driving in the summer - the WRG3 has some additional ribs & elements that promote airflow
  • You drive a heavy car - the WRG3 is not as soft and will have less accelerated wear issues
Sounds like your dad's use case meets neither of these, so I would advise sticking with the WR. Other available options include the Toyo Celsius (Consumer Reports says this is as good as the WRG3), GoodYear WeatherReady (brand new tire), and Kumho Solus HA31. The Hankook Optimo 4S that CT sells is inferior.

Oddly enough, Europe already has the WRG4 released. Wonder when we'll get it here.

As a side note, other than availability, I really think most people who don't have winter tires ought to get all weathers. IMO Vancouver's winters are more challenging than the ones we have here because of the ice, hills, and narrow arterials.
