The idea of closing stores down in the fall is nuts and is certainly a surefire sign of severe financial stress. December is typically the strongest retail month of the year by a massive margin (hence "black Friday" = the day historically retailers would become profitable for the year) so to struggle through all the quiet season and miss out on the peak holiday business means they have so little cash they can't even stay open.
