This is a good selection. Or, you can get a flight straight into Venice, ferry over to Croatia, and then work your way up. I went to Slovenia and Croatia a few years ago and looked into taking the train from Munich down to Slovenia - you lose a day and the price was more expensive than a flight. I didn't want a layover in Europe, so I chose YVR-Toronto-Venice. Venice is worth the trip - take a personal taxi, even though it will set you back $200 Euros, it is worth it.
Slovenia is gorgeous, inexpensive, and everyone speaks English. Croatia is pretty, but much more dirty than Slovenia, and they aren't always willing to speak English with you in smaller towns. Vienna has some of the best museums in Europe.
