I laid mine on smooth and it gets a little slippery. It's not bad with just water but can be a bit hairy with slush but we hardly ever get snow in Vancouver.

I was going to use some sand in the paint for traction and in hindsight I'm glad I didn't. I'd rather trade off safety for easier cleaning. It's really easy to mop and squeegee the water out the garage door.

If your parent's don't have good balance, I would recommend a little sand in the mix. Or maybe some (temporary) traction aid from the entrance to the car doors and leave the rest smooth if you like working under cars.
